DROITWICH Spa's new multi-million pound health centre development has moved a step closer to becoming a reality.
The proposed building, on the former magistrates court site, in Ombersley Road East, has been given the green light by planning officials.
The news is a major step forward and could see demolition work start as early as May.
At the last meeting of Wychavon District Council's executive board Cllr Judy Pearce (Con-Dodderhill) reported from a letter from the assistant director of South Worcestershire PCT that the development had received final planning consent.
Planning permission was given with some conditions relating to car parking near the site but once conditions have been resolved work could start soon after.
Developer McAlpine has now applied to the Highways Authority for a "Stopping Order" on a roadway that runs through the site.
After the application is processed the purchase of the magistrates' court site from Worcestershire County Council will take place.
If all goes to plan it is hoped the project, which will cost over £6 million, could be completed by September 2007.
The three-storey building will house 22 doctors, compared to the 12 already available.
There will also be a proportional increase in the number of midwifes, nurses and other medical staff.
Assistant director of primary care for South Worcestershire PCT, Nigel Higenbottam, said: "This a big step for the project.
"We are on the right path to getting a superior health centre in Droitwich Spa.
"GP services in the town will be greatly enhanced."
The news the potential site development has moved forward has also been met with delight in the town.
Chairman of Wychavon District Council, Cllr Pam Davey (Con-Droitwich Spa East), said: "In spite of all the difficulties experienced in the NHS it is encouraging that Droitwich Health Centre is moving according to plan and is very much on track."
