PAUL Wyatt capped his return to the side with a fine penalty save which sent Malvern into round two of the WFA Senior Urn on Tuesday night.
MALVERN TOWN 2, BARNT GREEN SPARTAK 2
(Malvern won 5-4 on penalties)
Wyatt returned to the side after injury ruled out Craig Humphries and saved Spartak's fourth penalty in the shoot-out ,to allow Des Cox to step up and score the winner.
Spartak are from the Midland Combination, the same league as Castle Vale, who dumped Malvern out of the FA Vase on Saturday.
Malvern got a dream start, scoring after just a minute as Lee Tompkins beat a defender and rifled home.
The lead was cancelled out on 15 minutes by a header from Warren Sewell but Darren Bullock restored the advantage on 30 minutes.
Ahead at the break, Malvern were having the best of the play but were pegged back on 55 minutes by a goal from Naveed Arshad.
With scores deadlocked at 90 minutes and then extra-time, a penalty shoot-out loomed. Bullock, Nathan Jukes, Rik Halion, Mark Owen and, finally, Cox were the men on target.
The game was a chance to give a run-out to some players returning from injury and both Andy Chalmers and Mark Burrows came through well. However, Phil Preedy remains a significant doubt, still being troubled by his injury.
Malvern are away to Quorn tomorrow, the game kicking-off at 3pm and are scheduled to be at home on Tuesday night to Oldbury.
However, cup duty has complicated Oldbury's fixture list and there is a doubt over the game. Malvern supporters are urged to check with the club on 01684 574068.
