REPAIR work is to be carried out on a treacherous part of paving that has caused the downfall of several people, thanks to a Worcester News campaign.

The paper has reported on several occasions how people have fallen on the uneven surface in The Shambles in the city centre and hurt themselves.

Injuries suffered have ranged from muscle damage to a dislocated shoulder and broken toes.

Now, Worcestershire County Council has revealed as a result of the articles, it is carry out repairs at 12 spots in the area in the next seven days.

A spokesman for the authority said: "After a detailed inspection of the area earlier this week, 12 items have been identified for repair. Contractors will be carrying out the works in the next week."

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Aubrey Tarbuck, has been particularly outspoken about The Shambles and thanked the News for bringing the subject into the headlines.

He said: "There have been many incidents and it really needs tidying up.

"The state of the paving in The Shambles is a complete disgrace and it was something that needed to be highlighted and I thank the Worcester News for that. I spoke to one woman from Nottingham who had been visiting her daughter and she was dreadfully hurt. Something needs to be done and quick."

That woman is Brenda Thurman, who was one of three to be quoted in an article last Saturday.

The 71-year-old dislocated her shoulder and broke two toes after a fall in November.

She said: "People don't have to put up with this. You don't expect to go into a town and have this happen to you.

"I am having physiotherapy and am still in a lot of pain."
