SUNDAY saw the quarter-finals of the President's Cup in thesoccersite.co.uk Malvern League.
If league leaders Bell Inn 98 were expecting an easy passage when they entertained Talbot Head, they were given a rude awakening and were grateful for the final whistle, which saw them progress to the semi-finals by courtesy of a hard won 3-2 victory.
In a competitive first-half, the only goal went to Bell Inn 98 courtesy of a Lee Hooper effort. The second-half started with a bang and Bell found themselves behind thanks to a Tom Hofton penalty and a goal from Adam Webb. The home side then battled back and regained the lead with goals from Dan Herbert and Chris Grubb.
The Bell had to battle hard during an anxious last 15 minutes as Talbot Head pushed hard for the equaliser but to no avail and it was Bell Inn 98 who progressed to a semi-final visit to Keyz 04.
In a clash of the Keys at Sling Lane, it appeared that it was going to be a repeat of the previous week's tight contest, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Firstly visitors Belmont Keys took the lead in the 20th minute, only for Chris Golding and Andy Lancett to score to put Keyz 04 2-1 up at half-time.
The goals rained in during the second-half as Keyz 04 scored a further nine times without response.
The goals came from Nick Lancett, another from Chris Golding, Simon Clarke, who touched home a goal-bound shot from Martin Sharpe, a sublime 35-yard lob from Tom Holland, two from Rob Kelly and a further three from Andy Lancett.
The tie between Dynamo Ledbury and Morgan Aero 8 was also a close affair with Dynamo Ledbury going through by 2-1. Dynamo took the lead when Lee Jones headed a Martin Punt cross home from just inside the box. The equaliser came just before halftime when a Matt Ilsley header found the back of the net.
The second-half was even and with the game seemingly heading for extra-time, it was the home side who snatched a late winner when Pete Boyle beat two defenders before curling his shot home.
Dynamo Ledbury will be at home in the semi-finals to Oak Academy, who progressed thanks to a 3-1 victory at Keys Victoria with goals from Nathan Mullins, Josh Nolan and Mark Kirby, with the home side's response by Steve Wood.
In division one, Cross Keys and Oak Allstars made ground up on Bell Inn 98 with convincing wins.
Cross Keys visited Fromes Hill where goals from Damian Lloyd, Andrew Hurrell, Rob Cullen and two from Mike Cole gave them a 5-0 victory.
Oak Allstars visited Ganglands and really boosted their goal average when they scored a crushing 15-1 victory over a depleted home side. In the process, they became the first team to notch up a 100 league goals this season. Another achievement was that of James Dean, who scored eight goals during the game. Other scorers were Jamie Gladwin, Neil Gardiner, Chris Stone and two each for Jamie James and Tim Rutherford. Ganglands' solitary response came from Gordon Mansell.
The other league game proved to be entertaining as Oak Misfits beat visitors Fromes Hill Reserves 8-4. There was so many chances missed that a double figure draw could have resulted if only half the opportunities had been taken.
Oak Misfits' goals came from Stuart Crowe, Terry Boswell, Zeki Koral, Rodney Hathaway and two each for Asa Smith and Chris Hodges with Fromes' goals coming from Aaron Richards, Matt Porter, Matt Brookes and Chaz Jones.
Leading goalscorers in league and internal cup competitions, as at February 12, are: 32 Jamie James (Oak Allstars), 28 James Dean (Oak Allstars), 27 Andy Lancett (Keyz 04), 26 Dan Herbert (Bell Inn 98), 23 Chris Grubb (Bell Inn 98), 22 Wayne Cadmore (Ganglands).
At Monday's league meeting, the team-of-the-month award went to Bell Inn 98.
