SIR - In reply to your article about the sacked postman needing a hip operation, I worked with John Jenkins for 20 years.

John, like his father before him, was a stalwart worker for the Royal Mail. From telegram boy to postman to postman driver, John was honest, loyal and reliable. He could do any job the Royal Mail had to offer.

He also gave sterling performances on the sports field playing for the then GPO. His condition was probably brought on by years of carrying a mailbag around his neck! There was no easy methods as there are today for carrying mail. We left the sorting office looking like pack mules.

John's sense of humour and fair play was legendary.

J BADGER,

Worcester.
