Stourbridge Lions 17 Droitwich Spa 14
West Midlands Division Four (South)
DROITWICH produced one of their best performances of the season to give leaders Stourbridge Lions a scare in the Midlands Division Four West (South) on Saturday.
Spa were denied a win over the division's pace setters by a try late on.
Droitwich though had ran the Lions ragged, coming from 12-0 down to go 14-12 up, before late pressure by the home side saw them score the winning try.
Droitwich went into the match missing a host of players. Such was their injury crisis that veterans Jon Andrews and Richard Pedley were called into the side.
The home side got to grips with the
game early on and two tries had Droitwich reeling.
Captain Nick Godfrey rallied his team and they began to force Stourbridge back into their own half.
Back row players Leon Hopkins and
Chris Hooper also added a creative spark for Droitwich. Good play by Paul Sweeney set Hopkins free to score a try, which was converted by Hooper.
Godfrey then pounced from short range for a second try, converted by Hooper, to edge Droitwich into the lead. However, the leaders roared back in the dying minutes to grab the decisive try.
Droitwich will be hoping to put an end to the bad run of results they have suffered since the New Year when they take on Coventry Marconi at home on Saturday, February 18 (2.15pm start).
Spa's promotion hopes have been wrecked by a three match losing streak.
However, after a rousing performance against Stourbridge Lions Droitwich will be feeling in better shape for the visit of the division's bottom side.
