I read with dismay the letters encouraging the idea of a 'train' up the hills.
A safe, free place to walk in peace, with stunning, uplifting views should be valued as priceless, and I am very grateful to the conservators for treating them as such. There are many opportunities to engage in the more commercially sponsored tourist attractions elsewhere. The Malvern Hills paths and wonderful views are unique and must not be degraded.
A form of transport that would link the town centre to St Ann's Well would have merit, but as one of your correspondents pointed out, a noisy, polluting diesel vehicle would be most unsuitable. A silent, clean battery vehicle would clearly hold many attractions, but perhaps donkey pulled 'traps' would be even more appealing?
If a 'clean' mode of transport could be arranged to St Ann's Well, it should go no further. Our attention is constantly being drawn to the lack of exercise taken by so many, especially the young. If people were encouraged onto the hills and dropped off by St Ann's Well, many would be encouraged to walk and no vehicle would violate the tranquillity of the summits and hill paths.
I can sympathise with the elderly and the infirm who miss out on the joys of the summits. Couldn't a similar donkey trap (or battery powered cart) use the metalled Beacon Road, and be preserved for limited, pre-booked journeys for passengers with authenticated disabilities.
