MALVERN fencer Sam Stockley, Worcestershire's top foilist, has won the Aldershot Open men's foil tournament from a field of 68 fencers.
Seeded second after the round of pools, he made steady progress to the quarter-finals where he found himself 2-7 down before recovering his concentration to win 15-10. There was not more than a hit between him and the experienced Portsmouth foilist Pat Robbins to 12-all in the semi-finals, but three quick parry-ripostes gave Stockley victory at 15-12.
The final was against former British team member Tony Bartlett, who had narrowly beaten Stockley two months previously in a strong London event.
This time, however, the Worcester Fencing Club foilist made no mistake and secured a relatively comfortable 15-9 victory.
