The news for Evesham is not good. The much needed High Street revamp is delayed. The grant for the crumbing Regal cinema is revoked. And still the old Town Hall in the very centre of the town is dirty and neglected, a very public eyesore in a very public place.
May I suggest a way forward for the Town Hall? The ground floor is empty, it has been empty for a long time . No one seems to want to run a business there. So let's clear it out. Make it an open space which you can walk through and allow market stalls there, under cover. The beautiful upstairs room would remain of course but at street level there would be a series of graceful arches, possibly just like there used to be. Why? Firstly it would look great from all directions and at last the Town Hall would be a worthy companion to the beautiful Round House occupied by Nat West Bank. Secondly it would help to link the two parts of the town, the High Street with Abbey Road and you could avoid walking around that nasty corner by the railings.
Thirdly and possibly most important, it would become a useful space once again.
Lets put Evesham back on the map and get a Town Hall we can be proud of. Shall we start a Public Campaign? Does anybody wish to join me?
