RECORDS had been broken at the Post Office in Bromsgrove over Christmas, where close on one million letters, cards and parcels had passed through the sorting office. Many staff had worked 19 hours at the peak of the rush and over 60 temporary staff had been employed.
MAUREEN Brooks, assistant to the matron at Lickey Blind School near Bromsgrove, became engaged while flying at 3,000 feet directly over Gloucester Cathedral on Christmas Eve when the pilot, Stanley Watkins, slipped a ring on her finger. He was a member of Cheltenham Aero Club. When later asked if they had sealed it with a kiss she blushingly replied "flying regulations had been strictly observed."
BROMSGROVE Rovers accepted a tender for £1,050 for installing floodlights on their Victoria Ground. It was hoped they would play their first game under their own lamps against a top class team from the Midlands. The next project would be to build a new stand on the Stourbridge Road side of the ground.
CHRISTMAS at Bromsgrove's hospitals was celebrated in traditional style. About 40 staff, carrying hurricane lamps, toured the 13 wards at the general, singing carols. John Nicholls visited patients at the Cottage Hospital on Christmas morning where Dr N Kenchington helped carve the turkey. And Drs McIlveen and Parkin donned fancy dress to lead the fun at Hill Top.
