JOHN Brain thought the weather was the true winner as Worcester Rugby Club squelched to a 10-6 victory over London Welsh.
The Sixways side played some enterprising rugby in the first half but as the rain continued to hammer down on Saturday, the game could have passed for synchronised swimming contest.
And for the head coach, he was just pleased to get a result out of an impossible situation.
"The game was reduced to a farce in the second half," said Brain.
"It was very unfortunate because we'd played some good rugby in the first half, into the wind. What can you do though in those conditions? We are just glad that at 10-6 the bizarre did not happen and London Welsh did not sneak it because we didn't deserve to lose the game.
"We dominated territorially and we've won the game which is very positive considering the conditions."
Worcester were desperate for a pick-me-up after last weekend's devastating defeat at Rotherham but they were made to work for it by the weather and a dogged London Welsh outfit.
Trailing 6-0 after seven minutes, Worcester got back into the game with a Martin Morgan try followed by skipper Jim Jenner's 31st minute touchdown. They were unable to get the four tries and the bonus point but, in all fairness, it was never on in such conditions.
"I've never seen such weather during a game and you just don't expect those conditions," added Brain.
"The referee must have been very close at one stage to postponing the game. We obviously wanted to keep going to try and get the five points but it wasn't to be. You cannot read anything into the second half but before that we've played some good stuff and done the job at half time. Conditions were simply farcical after that."
The former Gloucester coach was delighted with the effort and commitment of his players, especially after going 6-0 down early on.
"We kept going and that is very encouraging because the heads never went down," he said.
"Our basics were quite good in those conditions and I was pleased with the forwards. We've got a difficult game at Coventry on Saturday so with players such as Kingsley Jones and Chris Yates raring to go, it's a good position for a coach to be in."
