TITLE-chasing Worcestershire Royals were saved by the rain after a poor batting display against Leicestershire Foxes in yesterday's Norwich Union National League Division One match at New Road.
The wet weather eventually forced the game to be abandoned, cutting the County's lead at the top of the table to six points.
After winning the toss, Worcestershire were soon in trouble and sorely missed skipper Graeme Hick who, like the other England players, was not allowed to play for his county yesterday despite the second Test against the West Indies finishing in thrilling style on Saturday.
Difficulties
To add to their difficulties Rich-ard Illingworth suffered a thigh injury while batting and needed Vikram Solanki to act as a runner.
At one stage Worcestershire, who had won their previous six league matches, were sinking fast on 41-6 before a battling stand worth 48 in 19 overs between Steve Rhodes and Illingworth held up rampant Leicestershire's progress.
Illingworth went on to a top score of 30, while Lampitt made 20 as the County closed on 108-8.
Under the Duckworth-Lewis method it left Leicestershire facing a victory target of 118 in 38 overs but the rain had the last word.
