A COMMITTED student has won a prestigious award for running a Worcester children's club.

Sophie Nixon, aged 20, has managed and chaired the Kids Club in Dines Green for two years.

Her hard work has paid off, the children have benefited and she has been presented with the West Midlands Millennium Volunteer of 2005 Award.

Miss Nixon, who also found time to study English at the University of Worcester, said: "We have around 30 children from the ages of five through to 11 each week, and it's great to see the fun and enjoyment they gain from this club.

"I'm delighted to receive this award. It was a surprise and it's nice to see that the efforts of the volunteers are being recognised."

The club provides a safe environment for the youngsters to join in drama productions, discos, music lessons, and art and craft sessions.

Miss Nixon also organises fund-raising events and her next task is to raise enough money to take the children to Bristol Zoo.

University of Worcester vice-chancellor Professor David Green, who presented the award, said: "Sophie is a real credit to Worcester and to the university. We are all extremely proud of her."
