YOU carried a story on the proposed extension to Sainsbury's (Advertiser, January 18) in which Councillor Nigel Hicks, commenting as chairman of Redditch Council's planning committee, mentioned improvements made to the traffic island by the supermarket in 2003.

Councillor Hicks errantly claimed the Redditch Highways Partnership Unit had carried out the initial work on the island.

This was an honest mistake as Councillor Hicks is no doubt used to dealing with the Highways Partnership on a regular basis and it is responsible for many highways matters in Redditch and has contributed to the county council being labelled a good highways authority by the Audit Commission.

However, the Sainsbury's island improvements were carried out by the Accident Studies team based at County Hall in Worcester in a bid to reduce the number of accidents at the island.

The Highways Partnership was not involved in this process.

While the initial scheme was not up to the normal high standards we set ourselves, once amendments were made it has proved a great success and reduced the number of accidents at the island by more than 50 per cent.

I hope this makes matters clear.
