MALVERN returned to winning ways with a superb performance and a 33-10 victory against Newbold at Spring Lane.

The visitors made a brisk start and took the lead when their open-side flanker crossed in the sixth minute, following a catch and drive move.

From the re-start, Malvern countered and forced a penalty, which Steve Ott put over.

Four minutes before half-time, Malvern stand-off Dave Wilkinson again broke through and kicked ahead, winning the race to the touch-down to put the hosts in control.

Winger George Roberts then cut across the field to put the ball out to Ben Lamb on the left, with the youngster running in to give Malvern the lead.

Newbold won a five-metre scrum and, with the Malvern defence sucked in, Andrews nipped in for a try to give his side the lead once again.

Four minutes before half-time, Wilkinson again broke through and kicked ahead, winning the race to the touch down to put the hosts in control.

Malvern dominated after the break, even though Hill was sin-binned for coming in at the side.

They spread the ball and the Ott brothers combined in a scintillating move that saw full-back Steve come into the line in support of Dan.

The ball was released to the in-form George Roberts who sped through to score.

Malvern stole a Newbold throw-in, the visiting forwards encroached and Steve Ott put over the penalty to make it 21-10.

Phil Rawle then came off with an injury, which signalled the return of Jamie Anderson after an 11-month lay-off following shoulder reconstruction.

There were more yellow cards for Malvern with both Anderson and Gareth Richards sent to the sin-bin.

This just served to up the work-rate and keep Newbold pinned back. White took a quick penalty and Wilkinson crowned a splendid day with his second try, Ott converting.

With five minutes left, Anderson showed that his long lay-off hadn't affected him as he burst through to score, shaking off four of the opposition on the way for the crowning try of the day.

Malvern director of Rugby David Robins was delighted with the performance.

"We weathered Newbold's early storm and imposed ourselves firmly on the game," he said. "The pack was outstanding to a man, whilst White was a revelation at scrum-half.

"Gareth Taylor put in his best performance to date and Anderson showed that 11 months away hadn't diminished him at all.

"In midfield, Dave Wilkinson showed great vision and thought, while our defensive line, once again controlled by the wise head of Gareth Richards, held fast, snuffing out the Newbold backs who had given us a torrid time in October."
