THE new Malvern library extension is wonderful - light, airy and with an impressive staircase (with views over Worcestershire) leading to more books, comfortable chairs and places to study. More internet access is available and plenty of videos, DVDs and music and audio CDs.

The extended opening hours are very welcome but is there a hidden cost in the form of the lives of the existing staff? Are they being required to cover these extended opening hours without choice or remuneration?

It seems as though unlimited money can be found for impressive buildings but what about the people who maintain them and who serve us?
