MY father was born and brought up in West Malvern and as children we spent all our holidays in the 1950s and 60s up on the hills, so I know them well.
Having returned to West Malvern recently I have come to realise that many familiar names have been changed or lost.
Where did the term End Hill come from? We have always known it as Cradley Hill because it used to be in that part of West Malvern that was in Herefordshire as part of Cradley.
Table Hill was just part of North Hill.
The flat area between North Hill and Cradley Hill (sic) was known as 'The Rounders', as it was where the village children used to play before there was village playing fields, and the col between North Hill and Table Hill was called 'The Saddle', for obvious reasons if you look at it from the top of the Dingle valley.
More irritating is the way modern West Malverners call the village of Powick "Po-wick" - we always pronounce it as Poik.
If, heaven forbid, we ever become part of a United States of Europe, do you think the South Downs in Sussex will be renamed the North-West Downs of Europe?
