One man's dream to transform a Malvern department store known as the Harrods of the West Midlands into luxury housing is close to being realised.

When Richard Webb first bought Warwick House it was falling into disrepair and in danger of becoming the town's biggest eyesore.

He knew restoring the building was a major challenge and, as a frequent visitor to Malvern, was well aware of the store's former glory.

"When we first began it was a wonder the place was still standing and the gateway to Malvern had become a bit jaded to say the least," said Mr Webb.

"Something had to happen to it but the nature of the retail industry was changing so quickly that the only way forward was for it to go into property."

Five years on, the project is now nearing completion following the release for sale last week of the sixth and final phase of four-story townhouses in Warwick Court, off Abbey Road.

People eager to enjoy a little luxury in a prime town centre location have already snapped up most of the 15 townhouses and 15 apartments available.

Mr Webb is delighted his dream has been realised, and is understandably proud of the spectacular final results.

"I'd be very happy living in any of the properties. They're absolutely superb," he said.

"You simply can't rush a project of this nature, the focus throughout has been on quality."

Colin Townsend, of selling agents John Goodwin, believes Mr Webb's vision saved one of the town's most culturally significant locations.

"There were very few with the courage and vision to take on the buildings and make them work for the town," he said.

"One man came to the rescue and embarked on one of the most bold and imaginative renovation projects the town will ever see."

Mr Webb said it would take something significant to replace Warwick House in his affections once complete.

However, he has not ruled out the idea of taking on other local projects in the future.

"It's a possibility," he said. "At the moment we're looking around and keeping our options open."
