POWICK edged out Welland in this local Worcester Saturday League premier division derby and took three valuable points.
POWICK 3, WELLAND ATHLETIC 1
A frantic opening period saw chances few and far between with neither side able to establish any real pattern to their play. Welland took the lead when a corner was turned-in at the near post and, despite efforts to clear the ball, it was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Powick's equaliser came from a Dean Drinkwater free-kick which the Welland goalkeeper could only parry, leaving James Badham free to power the ball home.
Powick began the second-half playing down the slope and were finding space in the midfield, though Welland continued to counter attack at pace.
Powick took the lead when Drinkwater spun and shot and the ball crept under the despairing dive of goalkeeper Avery.
The game was played in a physical manner and at times tempers threatened to boil over.
Despite this, both sides were trying to play football and the final third goal arrived courtesy of a Stu Harvey volley with 15 minutes remaining.
To their credit Welland kept pressing forward and Mark Scrivener, Tom Crump and Steven Forrester all performed admirably.
Man-of-the-match for Powick was Lee Henderson.
