ANDY Ward is among the winners at this year's Wyre Forest Sport Awards after bowling over Kidder-minster Carolians by setting up a thriving new sports section at the rugby club.
Ward's efforts in establishing the bowls section have been rewarded with an outstanding contribution award. He will be presented with the accolade at tonight's annual presentation at the Glades Arena.
He joins teams and individuals from judo, rugby, rowing, sailing, hockey and gymnastics in winning a gong.
Ward joined the rugby club in the early 70s and turned out as a goal-kicking full-back until the late 80s.
He has held various positions including second, third and fourth team captain as well as president, chairman, social secretary, house secretary and colts secretary.
But it is his recent venture into the bowls that has earned Ward recognition in the Wyre Forest awards.
He was the driving force behind the formation of a bowls club at Marlpool Lane and helped to create the green. With the bowls section entering its sixth season, Ward is team captain and plays a vital role behind the scenes.
The retired chef is also a dedicated fund-raiser at the club and regularly caters for events.
