The report of the first year's working of the Evesham Charity Organisation Society which was presented to a very small meeting of the subscribers on Wedne-sday, is most satisfactory. It shows that the people of Evesham recognise there is ample room for a society of this kind and they are prepared to support it, although it would be far more satisfactory if the subscribers were more numerous even if the total income of the society was no greater than it is at present. The most gratifying sign, however, is the fact that only £25 has been spent in general relief. This for a town the size of Evesham is eminently satisfactory, and clearly proves that there was little distress during the year through which we have just passed.

It is now certain that the Bill promoted by the Lower Avon Navigation Company Ltd will meet with the most strenuous and powerful opposition when it is considered in the House of Lords. The Counties of Worcester and Gloucester, the Boroughs of Evesham and Tewkesbury, and the Rural District Councils of Evesham, Pershore and Tewkesbury have all passed resolutions to oppose the passage of the Bill and to employ funds for this purpose. It is also known that certain private persons and concerns, who would be vitally affected by its passing, are also petitioning against the measure. We can hardly recollect any single matter locally, over a long period of years, on which public opinion has been more solidly united.

At the meeting of the Pershore Parish Council on Tuesday, it was reported that a duplicate bus was now being run to Worcester, starting from Drakes Broughton, on the early service. An application for a similar bus service to run on Saturdays, made by the council in November, was re-considered by the Midland 2Red" bus company and a letter was read to the meeting pointing out that it would be necessary to come to an agreement with the railway company. In a subsequent letter the bus company said that the Railway Executive had been approached but could not agree. The council would have to produce further evidence of a need for the service.

Dresden House, one of Evesham's finest buildings and home of the Evesham Club for the past 50 years, is to be auctioned next month. The four-storey property in High Street is being sold because the cost of maintaining it. The auction will be at the Northwick Arms on February 26. Mr K Sinclair, chairman of the club, said attempts to sell the building privately with a lease-back arrangement had failed. He said they expected to realise around £100,000 from the auction. If the building is sold and the club is not re-established elsewhere it is expected that the proceeds of the sale will be distributed among the 100 or so members.
