KIDDERMINSTER Carol-ians came close to upsetting the form book during a competitive 17-9 defeat to Midlands Three West North leaders Bridgnorth.
KCs produced a superb second half performance to frighten the table-toppers but it was too little too late for the Marlpool Lane men.
A bright start by KCs was ruined when Bridgnorth raced into a 17-6 half time lead.
Two Chris Pinner penalties kept KCs in contention at the break and when the teams turned around, Andy Stooksbury's men dominated proceedings and only an unkind bounce prevented Pinner touching down.
The kicker further reduced the deficit to 17-9 with his third penalty and with KCs throwing everything at their opponents, Bridgnorth had to dig deep to hold on.
Coach Stooksbury insisted KCs' disappointment at not winning was a sign of the progress they had made over the past few months.
"I was pleased with the second half performance," he said.
"Ben Turner was outstanding, Rob Delahey established himself at blindside flanker and the backs are constantly looking dangerous.
KCs entertain Wednesbury at Marpool Lane at 2.15pm on Saturday.
It was honours even as the second team clash between KCs and Bridgnorth ended in a 15-15 draw.
Tries from Ben Stanier, returning from America, Mark Whittard and Hayden Pearce cancelled out Bridgnorth's lead.
KCs thirds lost 25-12 to their Bridgnorth counterparts - with one of their opponents filling in for the absent match referee.
They were disappointed by some debatable decisions and only had tries from Stu Greenwood and Mark Cleeton and a Spencer Crockett conversion to show for their efforts.
KCs thirds face Bromsgrove in the merit table on Saturday.
