ORGANISERS of a disabled people's club have been overwhelmed by the public's generosity after their community ambulance was struck by vandals.

Shirley Gledhill, chairman of Kidderminster and District Disabled Club, said they have been inundated with calls and letters of support after vandals unscrewed the light fittings and cut the wires.

Last week, the Shuttle/ Times and News reported how the cash-strapped charity faced a £600 bill and members had been left without a vehicle for both emergency and social use.

Yet Mrs Gledhill said she had been overwhelmed by the public's support and they hoped to have the lights repaired by the end of the week.

Among the offers of support was one from charitable group, Mercian Ambulance, which offered to supply a replacement vehicle while repairs were carried out.

Kidderminster mechanic, Mark Pearman, currently unemployed, also offered to carry out the work for nothing if parts were supplied.

The club has received interest from Droitwich and Tenbury Wells and there has also been an offer to overhaul the vehicle's exterior but it is yet to be confirmed.

Mrs Gledhill said: "We'd like to thank everyone who has offered their support. We've been overwhelmed by the kind response.

"We're hoping to get the repairs done before the club starts up again."

Anyone interested in lending their support or joining the club should contact secretary Fred Ballard on 01562 753094.
