WORCESTER'S Joanne Yapp will lead England into battle when they take on Wales in the Six Nations opener next week.

The scrum-half has been named captain for the clash at Old Albanians RFC on February 4. She will be joined in the starting '15' by Sixways team-mate Nicola Crawford as England aim to win their first Grand Slam.

Worcester's other England regular, three-quarter Kim Shaylor, is unavailable because of an ankle injury.

Coach Geoff Richards said: "We are really delighted that the Six Nations is just around the corner again and I personally am really excited about what I think we can achieve. I have named a squad who are experienced but have also included some youngsters who have certainly proven their worth this season.

"The last two seasons we have come off second best to France, but that is going to change this season. We want to go into a World Cup year winning the 'Grand Slam' and we also want to send a message to France to say that we really can beat them, even in their own backyard."

England last played Wales at Cardiff Arms Park in the Six Nations last season and came away with an 81-0 win. But Richards is adamant that their Welsh rivals will be in tougher form this time around.

He added: "Wales are going to be a lot stronger than they were last year. They have some of their more experienced players back so we won't be underestimating them."

Four Worcester players have also been named in the England 'A' starting line-up for Sunday's match against USA Eagles at Imber Court in Surrey.

Lock Rebecca Essex, flanker Lois Moulding, fly-half Alice Richardson and wing Amber Penrith have all been selected, while another Worcester player, Claire Allen, is among the replacements.
