I HAVE a soft spot for Louis Armstrong. My first musical memory is listening to What A Wonderful World and I am still moved each time I listen to the gravel-voiced crooner.
Armstrong, known to his millions of adoring fans as Satchmo, was regarded as one of the most influential jazz musicians in history and this latest collection includes many of his best known tracks.
The album starts with What A Wonderful World and follows up with the equally brilliant We Have All The Time In The World and Jeepers Creepers. There is an excellent duet with Ella Fitzgerald as they join forces for Tenderly, and a tongue-in-cheek version of Baby It's Cold Outside.
But there are some notable omissions from the playlist with no place for favourites Cabaret and Mack The Knife. The record company has also been stingy with the sleeve notes - surely a collection like this deserves more than a basic list of tracks?!
While this offers a good introduction to Satchmo, there are other more comprehensive collections around. So, soft spot or not, this Wonderful World is something of a disappointment.
