THE first event in the Malvern and District Orienteers' Mini-League took place on Castlemorton Common on Saturday and was a great success.
The event attracted over 150 people ranging from first-time families with babies in back packs to international orienteers and adventure racers as well as several competitors well into their 70s.
Conditions were extremely muddy underfoot but this did not seem to slow some down with very fast times being recorded - especially on the longer courses.
The Yellow course was won by MADO recruit Ethan Baker. Orange winner was Rachel White with local youngsters Jamie MacKenzie and Felix Goodbody in hot pursuit.
The Green course provided a close tussle between members of Harlequins and North Gloucester Clubs, event co-ordinator Lester Hartmann taking the honours with Rachel Tuffin of Malvern first lady home.
The Blue course, longest and toughest of them all, was won by Lake District visitor Jason Howell who beat local Adventure Racing champion Chris McSweeney into second place in a high class field.
The courses were planned by Tom Horton and controlled by Daniel Hartmann - who hope to get their league scores off the mark at the next event at Hollybed Common on February 25. Full details at www.mado.org.uk or on 01684 577062.
