SIR - I am responding to Joby Mullens' recent article regarding speeding through Callow End and the Old Hills area.
According to the highways partnership, the accident on December 23 was said to be an isolated incident. This is simply not the case; I simply do not understand where these people are coming from. Within the last four weeks there have been at least another five accidents on this particular stretch of road apart from the one on that date. As for the speeding mentioned by the highways partnership, it may be the case that cars involved in the many accidents on this stretch of road were not breaking the national speed limit.
However, this particular section of the highway has sharp bends and an adverse camber. In defence of the highways authorities I would say that it is up to drivers to drive at a speed having regard to conditions and visibility.
Having said this, many accidents along this stretch of road are not reported. But in most cases, speed is the cause.
STEVE SOUTHWICK,
Callow End.
