ONE of Redditch's most significant archaeological sites is to be restored to its former glory after residents' hard work and commitment was rewarded with a grant of nearly £25,000.

The Local Heritage Initiative cash has been given to Moons Moat Conservation Group, consisting of Church Hill residents supported by Redditch Council, to restore the medieval moat.

The moat was built to surround a hunting lodge by an unknown gentry family around 1300 and was most likely filled by a stream running nearby.

The site was probably abandoned as a residence before 1700 though it was used for various purposes up to the 19th century.

Excavations were carried out at the site in the 1960s and 1970s and it was first included in the Schedule of Ancient Monuments in 1968.

Council green spaces officer said: "After a fair bit of work already on the site, the group was fortunate enough to receive this Local Heritage Initiative grant.

"Needless to say, I'm delighted with the success. I feel it'll be a positive community project for Church Hill and will encourage other local groups to come forward and have a go."
