THE Greig this week unveiled its new name and logo as part of its £1.2 million facelift.

Alcester's centre for sports, leisure, recreation and arts has dropped the word "centre" from its title and is using a bird as its symbol.

"We changed the name to reflect the name the locals use," said centre director Stacy Robinson.

Mr Robinson added the bird denoted a "fresh start and inspirational future".

Work on the site is progressing quickly and phase one of the project is due to be completed on April 7, when the new gym, Greig Lifestyles, will be up and running.

The gym will have 38 stations with top-of-the range equipment, along with a cardio theatre. There will also be a therapy suite, fitness and aerobics classes, crche and dance studio.

The land around the building is also being re-landscaped using a £24,000 grant from Living Space, to be opened as an area for nature and natural beauty, where people can fish, walk and feed the ducks.

The project also includes improvements to the Greig Hall, with new toilets and kitchen facilities and a larger car park.

Mr Robinson said: "These are exciting times at the Greig and it's only the start, so we are asking people to come and have a look at what's being done, take an active interest in the facilities and hopefully help the charity remain sustainable for generations to come.

"Last year, 103,000 people visited the Greig and this year we hope to double that figure."
