TWENTY-seven Worcester households were evicted in the last 12 months because they failed to pay their rent.

But now, Worcester Community Housing has launched a campaign to ensure its remaining tenants do not go down the same route by urging them to put their 'Rent First' in 2006.

The campaign will urge anyone experiencing difficulties to seek help through a confidential helpline service.

It also signals a fresh crackdown on tenants who can afford to pay their rent but choose not to.

Staff will be on hand to offer advice and support and to help tenants make affordable arrangements to tackle their debt.

WCH Housing director Jean Hartley said: "At this time of year many of us have to juggle our finances to cover the cost of the festive season.

"That's why we are urging any of our tenants who are struggling to pay rent, or are worried that they may not be able to pay, to talk to us as soon as possible."

Bus adverts and postcards will hammer home the message that paying rent cannot be put off indefinitely and 27 households were evicted over the last year because of rent arrears.

"Our emphasis is on advice and support, and we want to help tenants who are in financial difficulties, but where we have to we will take strong action against tenants who continually fail to pay their rent," Jean added.

"It may seem harsh but by improving levels of rent collection we can bring real benefits to our tenants, including improving services and boosting funds available for repairs and maintenance to homes.

"The message for 2006 is clear - Rent First please!"

The Worcester News attempted to find out what support was on offer to evicted families once their homes had been taken away. Martin Saunders, centre manager at Worcester Housing and Benefits Advice Centre, said support was available through them, but declined to say what.

"Instead, we focus on preventing families being evicted in the first place," he said.

Tenants who feel they may be heading for rent payment problems can call the WCH Rents Helpline on 01905 76357, Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.

Free, independent and confidential debt advice is also available by phoning the Citizens Advice Bureau on 01905 611371.
