A MEMBER of Parliament from a country affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power station disaster almost 20 years stopped off in Worcestershire to thank people for helping his people.

Belarus MP Nikolia Dubovik was taken on a guided tour of Wychavon District Council's offices by the authority's chairman, Coun Pam Davey.

Mr Dubovik was visiting the area on behalf of the Help for Children In Belarus charity, which is based in Elmley Castle, near Evesham.

Following Tuesday's visit, Coun Davey said: "Nikolia came to thank all the people in our district who are still giving support to his people almost 20 years on from the devastation of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion.

"We shall be seeking to forge closer links with the people of Belarus in the coming months."

Most of the charity's work is carried out in Chernobyl.

Bredon Hill Middle School, in Evesham also has links with schools in the Belarus town of Uzda, for which Mr Dubovik is the MP.

He is also deputy chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on healthcare, physical culture and family.
