THE Wyre Forest and District Centre met at Blakedown parish room on December 6 to hear Dr Barrie Trinder's talk on "Midland Market Towns".
Dr Trinder outlined the characteristics of market towns, of which Ludlow is a good example - there are many outstanding buildings, and the town was fortified, with its castle to defend it.
Brackley and Bishop's Castle have developed along a single main street, while Bewdley and Bridgnorth grew up as river ports.
Stamford was a stopping place for coaches. The importance of a market town was indicated by its transport system and the number of carriers/carts travelling through.
The talk was illustrated by slides.
