WORK could soon start to renew the footbridge over the Spadesbourne Brook in Market Street.
Bromsgrove District Council's executive cabinet was last night (Tuesday) set to discuss, in private, tenders to replace the decaying bridge near the public toilets.
It has been closed since October after a pedestrian suffered minor injuries in an accident while crossing it. The bridge was subsequently condemned as unsafe by a consultant brought in to examine it.
The cost of the new structure will be a little under £12,000.
However, a lack of cash could have seen the bridge having to remain closed had it not been for a stroke of good fortune.
It is understood that recent tenders for certain new vehicles the authority wishes to purchase have been considerably lower than had originally been anticipated.
This has resulted in a windfall surplus of more than £60,000 from which the cost of the bridge will be met.
