The cricket club that coached the children of legendary Worcestershire all-rounder Basil 'Dolly' D'Oliveira is looking for a new home while its pitch is rebuilt by the University Of Worcester.
The university wants to redevelop the home of Dominies And Guild, which for the past 60 years has played in the tranquil surroundings of the Cathedral Guild ground, off Battenhall Road, to provide new facilities for its students and the people of Worcester.
According to club secretary Neil McDonald, a temporary ground will have to be found for the season after next as the boundary needs to be shortened during building work, so only the club's youth teams would be able to use the pitch.
He said: "We are in the hands of the university. We have been in discussions with them but the difficulty will be that whatever ground we play on, it's got to be up to a certain standard and the square needs to be prepared properly because of safety concerns.
"It will be a minor inconvenience for 2007 but it's going to be a fantastic development that will provide better facilities for not just us and the university but for football, rugby and the whole community."
But the university denied that plans for the ground were so advanced.
A spokesman said: "The proposal is at a very early stage and discussions are under way to secure a pavilion and sports fields at Battenhall for the people of Worcester for generations to come.
"The university owns playing fields at Battenhall and is investigating the possibility of creating a sports facility for use by the whole community. This will include student sport teams, cricket teams such as Dominies and Guild Cricket Club, football and rugby clubs and children's sports clubs."
The proposal includes creating a mixture of senior and junior pitches, a cricket square and a pavilion containing new changing rooms, shower and toilet blocks and facilities for sports and recreational use.
A public consultation on the matter will begin within the next few months.
