SIR - I back the waste recycling campaign, but I recycle next to nothing. Why? Because I can't get the city council to give me any recycling sacks.

I've had this problem ever since the city council first began to hand out waste sacks several years ago. Back then, I rang the city helpline a number of times, wrote to the department concerned and finally, when none of the promises of action was kept, I complained to a local councillor, resulting in the delivery of one roll of sacks, after which it was back to square one.

Recently I thought I really ought to try again, since recycling is supposed to be important to the future of the planet. I scrounged some sacks from a friend together with a sheet of labels requesting more sacks and put out my labelled recycling over several collection dates.

The result? Nothing - not a single sack! So when the last few borrowed sacks run out I'll be back to square one - again - recycling absolutely nothing. I'm not alone. I see streets around the city where hardly anything is put out for recycling and people living there tell me no one has any sacks.

TERRY WARDLE,
