FOLLOWING on from last week's article, we continue our look at more of the stables that could be providing some of the highlights in the new point-to-point season through the observations of Peter Mansell.
Claudia Wilesmith (nee Steele) - Upton-upon-Severn
Claudia Wilesmith enjoyed a 'dream' start to her training career with Bemy Dream last year. He proved unbeatable in point-to-points and also took a Wincanton Hunter Chase. He may have one run between the flags before chasing bigger prizes.
Owner Bill Booth was obviously pleased with the job she had been doing because he has placed another three horses in her care. These include Buckingham Bill, who won a Maiden on his racecourse debut in the South Midlands and Earl of Buckingham, who did little wrong in the south east last year.
Buckingham Pat is an unraced nine-year-old who has had problems in the past as has Rock Bleu, who is one of Raymond Anderson Green's cast-offs.
Roy Shail - Hollybush
Runners are likely to be thin on the ground for Roy Shail's Hollybush stable with just two horses currently in work.
Maggie's Brother and Rusty Fellow are both getting long in the tooth so it is unlikely that the latter can increase his winning tally. Maggie's Brother early season form is nothing to shout about but he could figure prominently in two long distance Hunter Chases at Huntingdon and Folkestone towards the end of the season.
Mike Daniell - Upton-upon-Severn
This stable has been through a quiet patch over the last couple of years.
Beesneez looked like making up into a useful pointer this season but he is unlikely to put in an appearance, while it is difficult to make an assessment of Cheapertokeeper based on one run in a mares maiden.
Connections have a five-year-old maiden by Sovereign Water out of Knightsbridge Girl they are hoping to call Warm Springs and a five-year-old by Presenting has been showing up well at home.
The ex-Dennis Caro trained Boardroom Dancer could put in an appearance but his last win was in a Southwell chase.
Nicky Sheppard - Eastnor
Hades de Seinne and dual winner Fanion de Neulliac have been sold, while Lost in the Snow has been picking up prize money under rules. He could return to pointing later in the season where he could pick up a small restricted.
Wellburn Boy has provided young Lucy Alfrey with some useful experience over the last two seasons but this year his services will be used by 16-year-old college student James Ridley. Upton Adventure has been with the Sheppards for seven seasons.
During that time the mare has run in 47 races, winning 25 of them and being placed in another 15, which means that she has won or been placed in 85 per cent of her races - a phenomenal achievement by the trainer.
Tim Stephenson - Castlemorton
Kates Ellie, A Proper Charlie and New Lodge Express remain from last year and they will be joined by New World Comet who missed 2005.
Among the newcomers to the yard are Arctic Sky who was purchased out of Nicky Henderson's stable at Cheltenham in May 2005. He has three successes to his credit, the last at Kempton in November 2003, so his absence from the course has to be a cause for concern.
Kingscourt Lad has joined the stable having previously been with Jonjo O'Neill at Jackdaws Castle. This eight-year-old won a Uttoxeter Bumper in 2004 and finished third in a Stratford Hurdle a year later.
Others to note include a Lord Americo five-year-old out of Cathedral Street who was purchased at Cheltenham last spring, while a nine-year-old Surpreme Leader gelding will be coming down from the Scottish Borders to accompany his rider who has settled in Malvern.
