THE Professional Kickboxing Association is opening its first clubs in Ledbury and Malvern later this month under the guidance of Steve Newby, chief instructor in the area.
Steve, who writes a regular column in Combat, the UK's largest martial arts magazine, has been teaching martial arts for some 28 years, with the SJN Combat arts academy, a regional arm of the British Kung Fu Association and with the International Amateur Kickboxing Sport Association.
With his team of instructors he is poised to introduce the PKA Kickboxing format throughout Herefordshire and Worcestershire. This is guaranteed to offer a real fitness workout and fat burner, ideal to see of the holiday excesses. It is also both a practical and realistic approach to self-defence training.
Steve said: "PKA, which encompasses a modern attitude to the old martial arts, was developed in the USA in the early 70s. It was introduced to the UK and the rest of Europe in 1974.
"Since then it has been a leader in the development of kickboxing in the UK and has brought the martial arts to the attention of the general public by introducing the most influential changes, making kickboxing a safe and enjoyable fitness activity for all.
"We have to recognise the needs of the modern world for a fitness programme that is both exciting but totally safe.
"PKA Kickboxing comprises of using kickboxing techniques in prearranged technical sets, offering those who would like to participate in a good workout the opportunity to do so without being forced into tournaments.
"While we still actively compete, we do not force those who do not want to fight in competition to do so."
Steve, who is also the senior administrator for traditional Lau Gar Kung Fu in the area, said: "It is far more rewarding and effective to provide separate sparing classes for those who want to compete."
The initial classes will take place at Ledbury Rugby Club, Ross Road, on Tuesday (January 10), at 7.30pm, and Malvern Rugby Club, Spring Lane, on Thursday (January 12), at 7pm.
