Mr Alfred Baldwin was on Tuesday formally adopted as the Conservative candidate for West Worcestershire. There has been much skirmishing; now the campaign has entered upon its most serious phase. The contending political parties have had their committee rooms open, and the staffs engaged are at full work completing the details of the organisation. The fight will be short and sharp. Malvern News, January 6, 1906.
It is with regret that we have to announce this week the death of Miss Eliza Jay, which occurred at her residence in New Street, Ledbury. She was of the advanced age of 87. Born in 1819, the deceased came of an old Dymock family, and she had been a great traveller, visiting most parts of Europe and residing in Malta for many years. The extent of her kindness will never be known, as many of the Ledbury poor found in her a friend, always ready to help them. Ledbury Free Press, January 9, 1906.

Because of recent acts of wanton damage on the hills, the Malvern Hills Conservators are on Monday to consider appointing voluntary wardens. The Lands and General Purposes Committee will report that the toposcope's glass cover has been smashed and that seats near Ivy Scar Rock have been destroyed or damaged. The board will also have before it reports of meetings of a special committee set up to consider what could be done about the depredations of sheep and to find ways and means of improving hills and commons stock farming. Malvern Gazette, January 6, 1956.
The Plough Sunday Service at Ashperton last Sunday recalls Plough Monday, one of the festivals to which little general interest is now attached. The name is supposed to indicate the resumption of works after Christmas and, before the reformation, ploughman collected money and put candles before a particular saint. In some parts, a decorated plough was drawn from house to house. Ledbury Reporter, January 13, 1956.

An American award for outstanding scientific achievement has been won by Dr Cyril Hilsum of RSRE. Dr Hilsum, a chief scientific officer in the physics group of the establishment, has won the David Sarnoff Award sponsored by the RCA Corporation of America and administered by the Institute of Electrical Engineers, for his work on compound semi-conductors, solid-state microwave and display devices. Malvern Gazette, January 8, 1981.
An unwritten law relating to advertisements in Ledbury has been broken by a local shop, it is claimed, because blinds have been erected over the shop frontage, advertising the premises. Town councillors are not amused, calling it "a very poor display and not in keeping with the environment of the town." Ledbury Reporter, January 8, 1981.
