JIM Friar held off a strong challenge from Mark Riley to win Kidderminster Chess Club's annual Lightning Tournament.
Friar remained unbeaten with five wins and two draws. After losing his first game, Riley won five in succession.
Needing to defeat Paul Thomas in the final round to stay in contention, Riley could only draw, to finish runner-up.
