FOR many years now, on New Year's Eve, I and a few friends have celebrated New Year by gathering around the Christmas tree in Bewdley town centre.
This event, which lasts no more than 20 minutes, is spontaneously attended by approximately 500 people.
The atmosphere is always good humoured, with the generations coming together in harmony.
Until this year it has been watched over by a few policemen, who have always been polite and low profile.
On this occasion, however, the police saw fit to park their white riot van directly in front of the Christmas tree, thus creating an overpowering presence.
Indeed this obstruction served to drive a wedge into the middle of the happy congregation right at the focal point of where everyone had come to celebrate.
The reason given to me for this intrusion on our enjoyment was to dissuade anyone from climbing up the Christmas tree.
Surely this police action was over the top? Let us hope that it won't be repeated.
