RESIDENTS in Kidderminster are fighting a proposed mobile phone mast which they believe will be an eyesore.

Mobile phone giant, 02, has applied for a 12.5m monopole mast and mounting, with three antennas as well as ground-based equipment cabinets, a ground-based meter and ancillary equipment on land in Habberley Road, next to Habberley Service Station.

Resident, Brian Woolley, 59, who lives in The Orchards with his wife and son, said he was opposed to the proposal, adding: "It is just going to stick out like a sore thumb. The mast itself is not going to look very nice. It is going to overlook us in our garden. We don't want to sit and look at it for evermore."

Chris Hathaway, of Habberley Lane, said he felt the mast would be an eyesore and "degrade the appearance of what is a very attractive suburb of Kidd-erminster".

He added he was worried about possible impact on the value of his property and had health concerns.

Nigel Knowles, who represents St Barn-abas on Worcester-shire County Council, is also objecting to the proposal.

He said: "I think it is disgraceful. I am encouraging anyone living in that area to write to Wyre Forest District Council."

Angela Johnson, community relations manager for 02, said: "It is urgently needed for coverage in the area. The masts have to fit in within the existing network so we can't just put them anywhere. We are now in-filling where there is a lack of coverage.

"They are slimline masts that are built to look similar to existing street furniture. They are also very low-powered transmitters so there is no evidence of any risk to health."

The consultation period will end on Monday and the siting and appearance of the mast will be considered at planning meeting on February 7.

l A Wyre Forest district councillor has launched a petition opposing plans for a phone mast on Kidderminster's Birmingham Road.

Liberal councillor, Rachel Lewis said: "O2 want to position a 12.5 metre high phone mast on the pavement on Birmingham Road opposite the Texaco Garage by the junction with Bruce Road.

"This is a residential area and local residents are up in arms against the proposal. They are concerned about the health implications of siting a mast so close to residential properties."

The petition is being distributed in Liberal Focus newsletters and is available from Councillor Lewis on 01562 68361.

An 02 spokesman, said the company was currently consulting the local community before deciding whether to make a formal application.
