A DROITWICH business is hoping to entice thousands of amateur golfers from around the country to take part in a brand new tournament. TOURNAMENT TO BE PROUD OF: Peter Fisher is the mastermind of the Uro Golf Super 12 Championship.
Droitwich based URO Competitions, which is on the Worcester Road, is hoping to sign up hundreds of clubs from around the country for the URO Golf Super 12 Championship.
The tournament is the brainchild of the company's owner Peter Fisher and is open to amateurs with a handicap of 12 and above.
Mr Fisher said: "There are more and more amateurs with a handicap of 12 and this is the first tournament which really caters for them.
"I wanted to see a competition where the average amateur golfer, with a handicap even as high as 28, would get a sporting chance of lifting a major trophy and title."
Currently the company is drumming up support for the tournament, which is set to have qualifying rounds up and down Britain.
There are 2,000 spaces for competitors, with 200 making it to final in the Algarve later in 2006.
All finalists will be put up in four-star hotels and there will be a glittering gala presentation night with a celebrity golfing guest to present the awards.
The two winners can claim £7,500 cash by going professional - otherwise prizes will be shared.
The company is underwriting the cost of the competition, with part of the competition's entrance fee (£100 plus VAT) set to be donated to the charity Harvest Help.
Finalists will play additional games in Portugal as part of the competition, while non-qualifiers will get a choice of designated courses in their area.
Fisher said: "We're expecting huge interest in the competition and will be encouraging clubs that host the preliminary rounds to combine it with an open day to help raise their own profile within their communities.
"This is all about giving golf a huge boost and we would expect the clubs to take the opportunity to do some fund-raising, while also staging demonstrations by professionals and equipment manufacturers. We want these rounds to be family fun days."
