SIR Great news just before Christmas! Maggs Day Centre receives continuing funding from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
It's brilliant spin that suggests the Government really cares about homelessness. But although they fund projects like this across the country they have no political commitment to major investment to build social housing.
For decades, governments have squandered the legacy of post-war administrations which built homes for the less wealthy to rent.
The consequences are ever greater levels of "hidden" homelessness, and astronomical expenditure on temporary accommodation which fleeces the taxpayer and lines the pockets of the private sector. Central strategies today focus on prevention of homelessness which is the natural recourse in the absence of political commitment to build the necessary homes.
The idea that the homelessness project officer of Worcester City Council and others could make a meaningful impact by having "focus groups" to discover areas of weakness in "service provision" is laughable and an insult to those who have no front door key, who lack hope and need security.
ANDREW BROWN,
Worcester.
