ANCHOR Falcons won their first game this season after being 2-0 behind to Portobello in the Worcester League division two at Dysons on Sunday.
ANCHOR FALCONS 3, PORTOBELLO 2
Following a much-improved showing at Claines, Anchor carried forward their encouraging display to beat a team seven places above them in the league table
Marcus Henney returned in goal, with Will Hale pushed into a central striking role, whilst Dyl Wilkins returned, in place of acting manager Jon Hale at centre-half, and formed an effective partnership with skipper Carl Wilkins at the heart of the defence.
The game started in typical end-to-end fashion and it was difficult to tell which side was struggling at the bottom of the table.
Mark Berry, whose return the side has had instrumental effect, pulled the strings in midfield, earning him man-of-the-match, ably assisted by John Goode, whose guile has been missed during his injury absence.
However, Portobello took the lead when a defensive scramble led to a crisp shot being despatched past Henney. Anchor pressed in search of an equaliser, with Paul Park going close several times, and Mike Griffin and Russ Collins providing a threat down the flanks.
Anchor found themselves 2-0 down when a low cross was turned into his own net by Chris Williams.
Before half-time, Park pulled a goal back when he broke away from his marker before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 15 yards.
The second-half belonged to the home side. Rich Lambert had replaced Griffin and his persistence down the left gave Anchor some real penetration. Park created a wonderful opportunity but spooned the ball wide before Steve Edkins unleashed a 30-yard shot which flashed wide. The equaliser arrived on 58 minutes, Park again expertly converting from 18 yards.
With 11 minutes remaining, debutants Oliver Stannard and Kyle Joiner were introduced. Joiner soon made his mark linking well with Park and when the ball flashed across the box, Lambert smashed it into the roof of the net to complete a superb comeback.
This Sunday, Anchor travel to Northwick Vale. Details on meeting place via the club phone as usual.
