BROMSGROVE residents are being given top advice by police to help prevent crime this Christmas.
Town police say there is often an increase in theft and burglaries at this time of year.
Sgt Gerry Smith said: "There is often a seasonal rise in house burglaries and thefts from cars at this time of year as offenders make the most of the hustle and bustle of Christmas.
"They target the extra shopping we do, knowing that we will have new boxed items in our cars, ready wrapped presents under trees at home and these will be more attractive than ever to a potential thief."
There is a current trend for high value high tech items such as mobile phone MP3 players, computers and satellite navigation systems.
Sgt Smith said people should think carefully where they park their cars while out Christmas shopping. Presents or other valuable items should not be on view in the car.
He added: "Try making several smaller shopping trips, rather than one large one, and avoid popping back to your car to dump heavy bags before returning to the shops - thieves may be watching and waiting for just a chance."
Police say security at home is more important than ever at this time of the year.
Windows should be closed, external doors locked and garages and sheds locked and checked to see that they are secure, especially if larger gifts are to be stored there.
If residents are buying expensive items check they will be covered by household insurance and note down the frame number of new bikes and serial numbers of electrical goods.
Sgt Smith added: "Many burglaries and thefts are opportune crimes. If you help limit the chances of a potential thief you are much less likely to be a victim, but instead can relax and enjoy the run-up to Christmas."
