AN Alcester man was arrested after police found explosives in a flat in Avon Crescent.
Fire crews were called to the flat just after 7pm on Sunday evening, after neighbours had reported seeing smoke.
Firefighters discovered chemicals and literature about manufacturing explosives in the flat and handed the matter over to the police.
All four flats in the block were evacuated and remained cordoned off during Monday as forensic officers and the bomb squad investigated the incident.
The 37-year-old resident was arrested when he returned to the flat and remained in custody as the Chronicle went to press.
An investigation is ongoing and forensic tests are being run to determine the nature of the substances found.
DI George Stepney said: "The initial indications are that it is not as sinister as it might appear and what we have is a resident who has a fascination with how things work and has a very large chemistry set.
"However, we are keeping an open mind and these things require a detailed and thorough examination."
A spokesman for South Warwickshire Housing Association refused to comment.
