ON a cold day in a light breeze, nine boat took to the river for the final race of the season at Arden Sailing Club (Defford).
Race Officer Dave Bowen set a testing course in the prevailing conditions. The first mark was not far upstream of the starting line. This meant that the fleet arrived on mass requiring some strategic sailing and knowledge of the rules.
Andrew Potts (Solo) took a good lead from Niall Campbell and Jane Smee (Enterprise) while Eric Ison (Laser) was seen doing penalty turns from which he never recovered, finishing in eighth place.
By the completion of the first lap Niall and Jane had taken the lead from the ever improving Stuart and Caroline Stephen (Enterprise). Meanwhile Dave Bryden (Heron) was last on the water and the Officer of the Day nearly finished him as he was so far behind. This is where the weather gods decided to take a hand in proceedings.
During the second lap the rest of the fleet changed place several times, but Dave remained at the back.
However, as the fleet began to finish the wind filled in behind Dave to such an extent that when the handicaps were worked out Dave Bryden (Heron) was the worthy winner from Niall Campbell and Jane Smee (Enterprise) second followed by Stuart and Caroline Stephen third with Keith Stevens (Comet) fourth, also benefiting from the change in wind strength.
