EVESHAM Men's Firsts continued their improvement in the Coaching Solutions West Midlands Premier Hockey League with a 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Droitwich Spa.

The win kept Evesham out of the relegation zone but the game had few moments of real quality as both teams found creating clear chances difficult.

Evesham looked strong enough in defence as Martin Husbands organised Neil Sollis, Frank Lake and James Tickle well.

And they often dominated midfield through Seb Seneque and Matt Baumber but many of the attacking moves broke down.

But Evesham scored two quick goals through Baumber and Stuart Harris to break Droitwich's resolve.

Scrappy play in the Droitwich area gave Baumber the chance to open the scoring and within minutes a short-corner move saw Harris extend the lead.

With less than five minutes left, a dubious decision gave the home side a short corner which they managed to skilfully flick home.

Panic set in for Evesham and Husbands produced an important block to prevent an equaliser.

Husbands admitted: "We've just seen two sides, low on confidence, essentially cancel each other out.

"But we're making progress each week and if we can win our last game before Christmas we can put a bit of distance between ourselves and the bottom clubs."
