THE Wyre Forest and District Centre's meeting at Blakedown parish room on November 8 comprised a talk on "Chatsworth 1950-2004".
Making his second appearance for the group, Simon Seligman, who has worked at Chatsworth for 14 years and is head of marketing and promotions, presented a tribute to the 11th Duke of Devonshire.
Chatsworth has been owned by the Cavendish family for 450 years, and thanks to the 11th Duke has become a thriving commercial enterprise, attracting some 650,000 paying visitors each year.
The Duke inherited many problems on the death of his father, including a £4.7 million tax bill. He gradually overcame his problems, selling paintings, and Hardwick Hall, even moving to nearby Churchdale Hall for a time. But it was not until 1974 that the tax bill was finally cleared.
The 12th Duke and his wife will soon move to Chatsworth.
