SIR - Concerning the proposed change of the term 'Christmas lights' to 'winter lights', by some city councils, as mentioned by J Alexander (November 22). I asked the opinions of young people with whom I work.
Students of many different cultural backgrounds were unanimous in criticising such a change under the auspices of offending anyone. Birmingham City Council has already changed its Christmas celebrations to those of a 'Winter Festival' much to the horror of many people.
Those students from Islam and Hindu faiths were especially appalled by the changes in terminology, mentioning, interestingly, the lack of respect these people in authority are displaying for their own country's faith heritage.
My students see Christmas as one of our country's traditions and some will even give Christmas cards to other students. In contrast to some media representations, these young people said that it would be better for those in government and local authority to show respect for and to value these Christmas celebrations, in the same way that other religions value their own festivals.
They suggested that this would make for mutual respect between cultures. So, it seems to me that those who are taking political correctness to extremes are causing division among groups and increasing bad feelings between faiths. Respecting our own religious festivals as well as those of our neighbours will increase tolerance and mutual respect.
